Hot water is what makes a hot tub such a relaxing experience. Unfortunately, hot water is also what can create challenges in managing the water quality. When you enter hot water, your pores dilate or widen causing the natural oils in the skin to be exposed. The rapidly moving water can also physically pull oils from the body.
Accumulation of contaminants can result in buildup along the waterline and in pipes and filters. This can also interfere with the performance of the sanitizer. These problems with the hazy appearance of the water and with the overall hot tub experience can be alleviated with some basic spa care tips:
- All bathers should shower before and after using the hot tub, preferably using soap and hot water. Showering before will not only wash away common skin bacteria, but will also remove perspiration and products like lotions and deodorants.
- Rinse or wash (without detergent), any clothing that may be used in your hot tub. Those great detergents that remove stains and make your clothes smell great can cause a soapy buildup in a hot tub and resulting in foam.
- It’s a good idea not to use any lotions or other products immediately before using the hot tub. The being® products are a blend of essential water soluble oils, herbs, and botanicals that promote well-being and do not add to oils and residues in your spa. The being® aromatherapy products can be added to your water and releases a light scent. There are six different aromas from which to choose.
Remember that a hot tub is a small body of water. Using your hot tub on a regular basis, dirt, perspiration, body oils, cosmetics and other contaminants will accumulate. As a rule of thumb, your hot tub should be drained and refilled every 60 to 90 days depending on use. Regular use is defined as two people using a hot tub, two to three times per week for about 30 minutes . This would warrant changing the water at least every 60 days. Of course, you should drain the water immediately if any problems arise.
Clean your spa shell regularly with a surface cleaner such as BAQUASpa® Surface Cleaner or Brilliance® Surface Cleaner. Never use household cleaners or detergents on your spa. Most are too harsh, contain abrasives and can damage the surface. The longer the buildup remains the harder it will be to remove. Chemically clean the filter every 4 to 6 weeks or when you drain and refill. Following these tips, along with regular weekly housekeeping using BAQUASpa® products or Brilliance® products will ensure that your hot tub experience is always a pleasant one.
