Open Your Pool for the Summer Season
As the calendar signals the start of summer, people in the northern regions are dusting off their swim trunks and goggles. With the right chemicals and the right steps, opening your pool for the summer is a breeze. In no time, you will be having fun in and around the pool, surrounded by your family and friends.
Whether you use a chlorine or chlorine-free system, start the season right. Follow these steps to open your pool and get ready for the season:
1. Uncover your Pool: Before you store your pool cover for the summer, clean it thoroughly to prevent mildew and deterioration.
2. Clean: Clean the inside of the pool and the pool deck to remove any decaying leaves or animals that may have taken up residence in your pool. A leaf skimmer can help remove any unwanted debris while a pool brush will help remove dirt or grime from the pool floor and walls.
3. Check for Debris: The skimmer basket, filter, hair/lint trap on the pump, main drains and pool returns should be checked for debris to prevent any clogs or blockages.
4. Reconnect and Inspect: While you reconnect all of your equipment, be sure to inspect the plumbing and electrical components for signs of wear and tear or rust. Make any repairs or replacements to ensure your pool is ready for the season.
5. Top Up: After all the equipment is reconnected, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for topping up your pool. Fill the pool to midway across the skimmer opening.
6. Turn on the Pump, Observe: After turning on the pump, check for any signs of leaks or air bubbles coming out of the return line. If you find any leaks, locate the source and make the repair.
7. Vacuum and Backwash: Before vacuuming, be sure the vacuum you use will not cause any damage to your pool’s finish.
8. Clean the Filter: Consult your professional pool care dealer for expert advice on the right chemicals for your filter.
9. Maintain Proper Water Balance: Experts recommend you take a pool water sample to your professional dealer at the beginning of the season for a detailed water analysis. Take the sample from 18 inches below the pool surface. Your dealer can provide comprehensive test results and advice on how to successfully start up your pool and maintain proper water balance throughout the season. Always follow your dealer’s instructions for water balance.
Keeping Pool Care Simple
Pool care doesn’t have to be difficult. Keep it simple with an easy and convenient pool care system. Our experts at POOLLifeMag.com recommend the POOLIFE® Multipurpose Tablet system or the POOLIFE® Active Cleaning Caplet System if you use a chlorine based pool care system. If you use a chlorine-free system , our experts recommend the BAQUACIL® CDX™ system.
