Safely Store Your Pool Chemicals for the Winter

November 2009

by Jenn Danko

Properly storing your pool care products during the winter is just as important as handling them safely during the summer. Use these storage tips from Arch Chemicals Product Specialist Cindy Sweeny to ensure your products are sealed, secured and ready to use when the sunny season returns.

Always read the label before using, handling, storing or disposing of pool care products.

Always protect your remaining supplies by isolating them in a place where they will be sheltered from the elements—preferably a warm place outside of the home. “All pool chemicals have some risk of freezing, which may make the products unusable,” Sweeny says.

Never store pool care products within reach of children.

Always know the first aid instructions for the pool and spa maintenance products you use, and keep emergency medical and poison control numbers handy. In case of emergency, call the poison control center nearest you or call the Arch Chemicals Emergency Action Network hotline at 1-800-654-6911.

Always keep pool care products away from heat or open flame.

Always keep product containers upright in a solid, plastic bin to prevent them from cracking and leaking in the cold.

Never return spilled material to the original container or dispose of spilled material in the trash.

Always add pool products to pool water.

Never add water to products, such as premixing them in a bucket.

Always use clean, dry equipment when handling, transferring or measuring chemicals.

Never mix pool products with any other pool products or other substances.

Always keep all pool maintenance products in their original, separate containers, using the child-resistant caps provided.

Never combine any materials in an effort to save space. Mixing chemicals could result in fire, explosion or the release of dangerous gases.

Always wear the proper protective equipment (rubber gloves, safety goggles, etc.) when handling chemicals.
