The Importance of Proper Ventilation for Indoor Spas

Hot tubs and spas can mean year-round fun and relaxation. While some people use their hot tubs or spas outdoors, others prefer the privacy of an indoor spa. For the indoor spa user, one important consideration should be to have the room properly ventilated. Without adequate ventilation allowing steam and odors to escape, moisture can become a culprit allowing the spa cover, cushions and other furniture and accessories to be susceptible to molds and mildew. Using your hot tub for 15 minutes releases the equivalent water vapor of a hot shower of the same duration.
According to Paul Kurke, Arch Chemicals Manager for Pool and Spa Training, a simple bathroom fan will serve well to evacuate the air. “These [fans] are not expensive and are fairly easy to install,” Kurke said. He further explained that even indoor spas need to be covered and while the fan does not need to run continuously, it is important to turn it on prior to uncovering the spa. This will allow the air to begin circulating so that when the steam from the hot tub rises, it can easily flow with the air and be evacuated.
In addition to making sure that there is proper ventilation in the room, following the steps for proper spa maintenance will also help eliminate undesired odors from an indoor spa. For spa owners who use the BaquaSpa ® system, it is very important to add the products in proper sequence beginning with the BAQUASpa® Waterline Control. If you are using the BRILLIANCE® system, it is recommended to add the BRILLIANCE® Metal and Scale Control followed by the BRILLIANCE® Start-Up, and then BRILLIANCE® Oxidizer or BRILLIANCE® Sanitizer.
As always recommended, test your water as part of your regular maintenance program to make sure it is adequately sanitized and the water is balanced.
Happy Soaking!!!
