Turn Your Grill into a Poolside Kitchen

When you were a kid, outdoor cooking undoubtedly meant grilling with Dad. Tongs in hand, he’d expertly flip the burgers and everyone would crowd around the barbeque, waiting expectantly for dinner to be served. It’s safe to say that our love for outdoor cooking has only grown over the years. But now, it’s less about waiting around for the hotdogs to finish cooking, and more about convenience and entertainment. In fact, creating a poolside kitchen is one of the hottest trends in outdoor design. While a full outdoor kitchen makeover may not be in your budget this pool season, you can still create your own version with your grill and a few simple additions.

Making Room

The key to a great poolside kitchen is not necessarily having a top-of-the-line grill and accessories—it’s planning. In order to make the most of your outdoor grill space, be sure to tailor your design to the space you have available.

If, in fact, space considerations are a major concern with your current setup, there are several space-saving and storage options to choose from. Installing shelves and cabinets is a great place to start. Mount them on an existing wall, or opt for free-standing models. This will allow you to store all your grilling accessories and utensils while incorporating a discreet area for a small fridge. These cabinets can also serve to create additional counter space. A non-obtrusive side table is another way to create the illusion of space while incorporating extra work space.

If you find yourself entertaining and cooking outdoors regularly, consider adding other small appliances such as a food warming drawer or a beverage refrigerator. Additions like these don’t have to involve complicated construction projects, or break the bank.

Set up a dining space

The next step is to incorporate an eating area. This can be something as simple and informal as a cafe table or patio chairs with end tables. Both options are available at your local home goods store. Be sure to make a shaded area in your dining space by incorporating a freestanding or tabletop umbrella to protect eaters from the strong summer sun. Also, be mindful of wind and table placement. For example, the direction of smoke blowing off the grill can be unpleasant for guests if they’re put in the way.

Also be sure to arrange it so both you and the grill are facing your guests. You don’t want to miss out on any fun, or isolate yourself when performing your host duties.

Get a “hardy” grill

Looking for the right grill to pull the whole kitchen together? According to HGTV, choosing a “hardy” grill can be a good way to get your money’s worth and ensure it has the staying power for many summers to come. Many such grills offer accessories such as a rotisserie bar or a range for stovetop cooking, but if these kinds of accessories aren’t in your budget, a basic model can definitely do the job. For added savings, shop for items such as grills and outdoor fridges during the off-season.

The rest will be up to your guests. Let them be the judges after they taste the first juicy hamburgers of the season.

Looking for the perfect recipe to kickoff your new poolside kitchen?

Try this delicious grilled pineapple dessert:

Ingredients:

  • 1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored, cut into 1/2″ slices
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice (or use all lime or all lemon juice)
  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 cups orange or lime sorbet (or any flavor)

Preparation:

1. Prepare and preheat grill.

2. Combine brown sugar, juices, honey, and cinnamon in a small bowl until smooth.

3. Spread this mixture on each side of each pineapple ring.

4. Grill pineapple 4″ to 5″ from medium coals for 5-10 minutes, turning once, until sugar mixture melts and pineapple is heated and tender, brushing with any remaining brown sugar mixture.

5. Top each slice with a small scoop of sorbet and serve immediately.
